Welcome Baby Francis!Just the quickest of announcements to let everyone know that Baby Francis was born Monday morning. Stats: a boy, 8 lbs, 15 oz., 20 inches long, 14.5 inch head (he was not going to be coming out of Julie the old fashioned way!). Everyone's healthy, Mom's recovery is happening more quickly than last time. Theo's first two visits have been encouraging. Here's the official Baby Francis homepage and here's the Baby Francis Flickr page

I have to run right back to the hospital now to visit Julie. Thanks everyone for all of your prayers! More picture soon.

Welcome Baby Francis! Welcome Baby Francis! Welcome Baby Francis! Welcome Baby Francis!

Update: we're all home!

Congratulations.

THERE was a child went forth every day;
And the first object he look’d upon, that object he became;
And that object became part of him for the day, or a certain part of the day, or for many
years, or
stretching cycles of years...

...His own parents,
He that had father’d him, and she that had conceiv’d him in her womb, and
birth’d him,
They gave this child more of themselves than that;
They gave him afterward every day—they became part of him...

Hi and thanks to everyone for your well wishes and prayers. I feel better today than I have since before the surgery and that's good. On a vain note, I want to just say that I look so BLOATED in that one picture and truly I think I was! They pumped me so full of fluid it was unbelievable so I think I was actually more swollen after the surgery than before. Yikes! Hoping it subsides soon.

*sigh* looking at the photos brings back a flood of wonderful memories of our second son being born. It's fun to think that you're not looking back, you're right in the middle of it. Thanks for giving us these glimpses.

What tremendous news! Congratulations! Martin and Julie, so glad your family is healthy, happy and growing. All the best...

Congratulations on a major milestone.

Julie, I was actually thinking that yours was one of the nicest "parents with new baby in the hospital" pictures I've seen. Hair combed and everything. I was envious.

And what a lucky baby to have such a good big brother.

What a beautiful picture! What a beautiful family!

Blessings, bountiful, to all.

Congrats Martin, I hope all is well with your second baby. You make having a family sound more exciting than I picture it! Thanks for your posting and comments, I plan on answering that last post in the next day or so about Hauerwas. Take Care.

Finally a picture with eyes open. I hope he is as sweet as he looks. And Theo still looks like such a darling. Love to all of you!

Martin,
Sorry I wanted to respond earlier, but I have just stated a full-time job (my first ever!) and it has taken some getting used too. I really like Hauweras, especially since he is a Yoder disciple. Reading Yoder's work has revolutionized the way I understand politics, and it has certainly informed me on the way Quakers should to politics (as he was an Anabaptist which is close enough for me). I love people who speak critically of the church, but you are right, too much critique only drives people off, it doesn't bring them together. one of my professors Ryan Bolger recently wrote about this idea of people being dismissed for what they say, I agree and know what it feels like. I heard about Hauerwas at Fuller, where a number of profs and some of my best friends love the man's work. As far as EFI goes, I am on the edge there, It would be very easy for them to dismiss much of what I say and do, but for some reason they have continued to support us as "one of the last leftist radicials still around." that is really what one of the super-intendents called me, and I think he actually meant it as a compliment. So one the one hand I have no friends in EFI that I know that would be Hauerwas sympathizers (unfortunately the majority of them are conservative republicans - so far as I can tell), they have seemed to allow for those more "radical views" if that is really what they are. I'd prefer to say they are more faithful to Christianity but who knows... Anyways Blessings, hope your week is great.
