Happy first of the month. The new issue of Friends Journal is up and it’s a great one: Creativity and the Arts. This is actually the first issue on the arts since the magazine went to color in 2013. Here’s a bit of the introductory Among Friends column written by yours truly:

This overt distrust of the arts faded away a long time ago. Today, the sheer volume of creativity among Friends is impressive. When we put out a call for this issue, we had far more submissions than we could possibly print. A dozen more artists told us they would love to write something but were too busy creating to do so at this time. Faced with a bit of a dilemma, we’ve created a sampler: each of the articles in these pages represents a different facet of creativity among Friends.

Throughout the diverse disciplines of visual arts, music, writing, photography, community-based art, and performance art, a common thread harks back to the concerns of those earlier Friends: there’s still a conscientiousness around art.

I’ll talk more about individual articles as we feature them but in the meantime, feel free to leave me your initial thoughts in the comments below. Bummed that you didn’t write anything? The issue on Meetings and Money is looking for submissions.

Lots of cool things about this. #1 is that we made positive ID of the picture via Google Goggles image search (technology FTW!). #2 is that the image map on the linked page lets you pick out a number of the participants; Lucretia’s not labeled but presumably she’s the woman next to James Mott, who’s near the right side looking down. #3 is that the fiery speaker is none other than Thomas Clarkson, the Anglican whose “Portraiture of Quakerism” is a must-read for the Quaker geek set. #friendsjournal #art

Her existing site was attractive, but it didn’t have online ordering and she wasn’t able to update it herself.

We put together a features list and then went through a round of concept screenshots which I built in Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop (you can see our work here!). Design in hand, I built a customized Movable Type site. A specialized template allows her to enter information about the each piece: medium, theme, price and the URL to it’s image (most of which are hosted on Flickr). Movable Type pulls these together into various category and individual art pages, with automatically-generated Paypal “Buy” buttons for available pieces. We stressed search-engine visibility so there are many categories and they all cross-link with each painting.
