Wow, so stunned to read the reports of Cesar Chavez abusing young girls and raping United Farm Worker VP Dolores Huerta.

In the mid-80s I was one of the many idealistic college kids who interned with the UFW for a summer. I got to hang out with him a number of times. His son-in-law ran the NYC-based media campaign and Cesar would come for planning meetings but also to visit his daughter and grandkids. She made great cheese enchiladas and all of us would talk late into the night as he told stories.

I do remember thinking—and asking—why the sainted VP Dolores Huerta never actually seemed all that involved, at least not to the point of ever coming East that summer to participate in NYC-based media strategy meetings. It was explained she was needed back in California.1 I never met her. I remember not being surprised at all that she didn’t ascend to the UFW presidency when Cesar died. It went instead to the son-in-law who had led our office.

My direct supervisor was a schlub and sexist pig. He was always making inappropriately suggestive comments to the young female interns, which they universally laughed off. They were all smart, confident women with futures who weren’t going to be put off by him. I was the only male intern that summer and he put me in shitty assignments, pressuring me to drop out. I assume I was seen as competition and indeed I did start dating a fellow intern (the only reason I put up with his behavior and made it through the summer). I see he’s still with the UFW, now listed as first vice president, which is not at all inspiring.

It was perhaps the most dysfunctional office culture I’ve ever seen. The union’s influence had obviously declined since the heady days of RFK marching with Cesar in huge rallies. They seemed to jump from fad to fad hoping to recapture attention. That year direct marketing was all the rage in business circles and the UFW was jumping in with both feet. We would spend hours in meetings setting unrealistic expectations, then break our own guidelines to “meet” them. I’d be called out for trying to do things the way we had agreed. I remember wondering if any of the office work I did that summer actually made a jot of difference. Helping to organize East Coast appearances of Cesar was definitely the highlight of the summer—well, that and the girlfriend and getting to hang out in New York City all the time.

I do have to wonder now if some of the dysfunction and sexism in the office was ultimately related to Cesar’s repeated molestation of children.2 Did he foster a culture in which we laughed off bad behavior and didn’t question poor management?

Odds and ends: last weekend my Friends meeting took a trip to John Woolman Association in Mount Holly, New Jersey, dedicated to the 18th century Quaker abolitionist; highly recommended if you’re in the area. On the way out of town I visited the Shinn Curtis Log House from 1712, which was so encased by additions over the centuries that the original house was forgotten until demolition of the later house in the late 1960s.

My state public media PBS station has announced they’re ceasing operations next year, hit hard by both federal and state budget cuts. Wedged between two top-five U.S. media markets (New York and Philly), statewide news is often an afterthought to their stations, so our PBS has been important. It’s also commissioned lots of quirky local history documentaries. In other media news, I’m excited for next year’s Mandalorian movie, though my two Star Wars kids are worried that the trailer is too cute.

Glad to see my new colleague Renzo Carranza in the latest QuakerSpeak.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and Friends in Business sponsored a two-person panel last night called “Quaker Voices, Digital Paths” and featuring Gloria Sullivan, who has over 600,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, and Griffin Macaulay, content creator for Dungeons and Dragons. Gloria doesn’t generally talk about being a Quaker on her channel but did in January. It’s had over 300,000 views and a staggering 6,042 comments.

@_gloyoyo_
quick notes on quakerism☮️✌️🕊️ #quaker #quakerism #quakers #icedcoffeeathome #icedcoffee #easyicedcoffeeathome
♬ original sound — Glo

The scale of the newer forms of online media is really staggering, as is the simplicity of starting a channel. There’s no need to incorporate or find funders or write mission statements: you just start talking to the computer. It quickly becomes all-consuming of course, and there’s a lot of thought that goes into the topics and scope of the channel. All the popular TikToks also have lots of edits to speed them up. It’s a lot of work to do this part or full-time.

Griffin talked about being known for a thing and remaining passionate about it even in a vacuum. It’s the follow-your-passion advice: loving what you do will pull people to you and you will find a way to turn it into a business.

In some ways, I feel that at least some of the work my colleagues and I are doing <a href="https://www.quakerranter.org/influencing-quakers/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-275410" title="At Friends Journal and QuakerSpeak, Quakers Today, and Quaker.org">3is akin to an outfielder scanning the sky for pop balls coming in from these internet mentions. When a popular influencer talks about Quakers I’m sure hundreds of fingers open a new tab to ask “What is a Quaker?” and “What Do Quakers Believe?” We hopefully show up in the search with easily-digestible answers and links to Quaker communities. I asked Gloria and Griffin for ideas about how we could better support inquirers they might send our way. We’re doing a lot already—good search engine optimization, catchy URLs—but there was some good advice on using Instagram better and really simplifying our messaging and turning it into stories.

This is a prediction for 2019 and beyond: The most powerful and interesting media model will remain raising money from members who don’t just permit but insist that the product be given away for free. The value comes not just what they’re buying, but who they’re buying it from and who gets to enjoy it.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever written down my personal guidelines. Some of these are generic to being a good online citizen (don’t feed trolls, don’t punch down, don’t respond in anger, disengage when a conversation is obviously running in circles).

Other guidelines of mine arguably come from Quaker values. For example, in general I won’t mention someone else on a forum in which they don’t appear. I’m especially wary on private Facebook groups, as they can easily become forum for detraction and us/them peer pressure. The Tract Association pamphlet on detraction is really a must-read. It’s actually probably something worth re-reading every six months. Readers: what kind of practices have you developed to be a responsible Quaker online?

I have an Ask Me Anything request from reader Ruby M:

Hello! I’m studying The Friends Church for academic purposes and I’d love to hear from someone with firsthand experience. How easy is it to become a quaker? Do you ever feel people treat you differently because you’re a quaker? Do you think there should be more representation of quakers in the media? Thank you so much for your time. I’m very eager to hear back from you!

Since my experience is just one data point, I hope others will use the comment section below to add their stories.

I found becoming a Quaker to be something of a spiral process. I first walked into a Friends meetinghouse at the age of 20 and only slowly took on an identity as a Friend. At each step of the process, I learned more clearly what that might mean and have strived to grow into deeper faithfulness. I didn’t formally apply for membership until a decade or so after I became a regular attender. This time lag is not unheard of but I don’t think it’s usual. It’s more of an insight into my own carefulness and reticence about joining things than it is an indication of anything the meetings I attended required. When I did finally apply for membership I was quite qualified and wanted the clearness process to be exacting: again, this is an insight into my psyche!

Most people on the street don’t quite know what Quakers are so I can’t say I’m always treated differently. I guess seeing more Quakers in the media would be helpful, though given our overall small numbers I suspect even our fleeting appearances in TV shows and movies are more than we might proportionally expect.

I’m interested to hear how other Friends would answer Ruby’s question.

Update: reader answers by email and commentary

Jessica F: I’ve wanted to be a Quaker since I learned about the Abolitionists who helped with the Underground Railroad and prison reform. Unfortunately, the movie Gentle Persuasion presented Quakers as being against music so I became a Unitarian instead. Eventually I learned that wasn’t true for many Quakers and I found that all of the values I had developed through the years were also Quaker values and so becoming a Quaker gave me a support system and a community of like minds.

Two things on the internet that I consistently like are NeimanLab and Kottke.org. The former is Harvard’s journalism foundation and its associated blog. They consistently publish thought-provoking lessons from media pioneers. If there’s an interesting online publishing model being tried, Neiman Labs will profile it. Kottke is one of the original old school blogs. Jason highlights things that are interesting to him and by and large, most of the posts happen to be interesting to me. He’s also one of the few breakout blogging stars who has kept going.

So today Neiman Labs posted an interview with Jason Kottke. Of course I like it.

There are a few things that Jason has done that I find remarkable. One is that he’s threaded an almost impossible path that has held back the centrifugal forces of the modern internet. He never went big and he never went small. By big, I mean he never tried to ramp his site up to become a media empire. No venture capitalist money, no clickbait headlines, no pivot to video or other trendy media chimera. He also didn’t go small: his blog has never been a confessional. While that traffic when to Facebook, his kind of curated links and thoughts is something that still works best as a blog.

Although I don’t blog myself too much anymore, I do think a lot about media models for Friends Journal. Its reliance on non-professional opinion writing prefigured blogs. It’s a fully digital magazine now, even as it continues as a print magazine. The membership model Kottke talks about (and Neiman Labs frequently profiles) is a likely one for us going into the long term.
